The term bail is assocciated with the setting
at liberty of a person in legal custody on an
undertaking (usually backed by some security,
given either by that person or by someone
else) to attend at a court at a stated time
and place. If the person does not attend, the
bail may be forfeited. The Bail Act of 1976
presumes that a suspect will be granted bail,
unless the police can give good reasons why
not, for example, by showing that a further
offence may take place.
